Green Day Live

Birmingham LG Arena

Tuesday October 27, 2009

If ever there was a list of bands, who could guarantee an evening filled with entertainment without fail, then Green Day would have to be at the top of that list.

After 5 years of producing the follow up to ‘American Idiot’, it is clear that Green Day are just as passionate playing live as they were when they first appeared on stage twenty years ago.

Back then Green Day looked like cocky kids blinking in the spotlight, since then the trio have changed and grown as a band, bringing punk rock back into the charts.

Tabloids may call them a ‘sell out band’ because they have become more commercial and less of an underground punk band, but, in true punk rock style, they came back throwing ‘American Idiot’ and ‘21st Century Breakdown’ at our feet; and now 16 years later, Green Day show us what we’ve been missing as 16,000 of us crowd into the arena.

Its 8 o’clock in the evening on this cold October night, but the adrenalin from the crowd soon warms up as we wait in anticipation for Billie Joe and crew, to show us the night of our lives. Welcome to paradise, indeed.
The waiting game ends as ‘Song Of The Century’ blares from the amps, sending the crowd forwards in their thousands. The drum beat pulses through the audience as they jump and scream in appreciation.

For the 3 hours that Green Day perform tonight they look like they own the place. The set itself is very different to that they brought to the UK back in June 2005.

Opening with ‘Song of the Century’ then ‘21st Century Breakdown’, ‘Holiday’ and ‘St Jimmy’.

I have to admit I am one of those fans who prefer the old school Green Day, in the days of ‘Nimrod’ and ‘Dookie’, which are in the set list along with 'Brainstew', 'King for a Day’, 'Minority' and 'Good Riddance’ (Time of Your Life). Even today the biggest crowd reaction occurs during the first few bars of the immortal classic ‘Basket Case’.

Along with their own classics they also perform Lulu’s ‘Shout’, ‘Teenage Kicks’ and Ben E. King’s ‘Stand By Me.’

The show was genius and typical for these American punk rockers. Billie Joe’s love for the audience shined through.

The trio announced two concerts at the LG Arena, Birmingham, earlier this year after they kicked off their world tour: 21st Century Breakdown, and will be returning to England in June 2010.
